Boston, MA, June 1, 2015 – The Brown Rudnick Center for the Public Interest proudly announces that its executive director, Al Wallis, received the Boston Bar Association’s (BBA) 2015 Thurgood Marshall Award. Wallis was recognized for his extraordinary leadership in the public interest and corporate social responsibility communities. He accepted the award on May 27th, during the BBA’s Law Day Dinner held at the Seaport World Trade Center.
Wallis is a recognized leader in the public interest and corporate social responsibility communities, both locally and nationally. When the law firm Brown Rudnick LLP created its Center for the Public Interest in 2001 to champion and coordinate the pro bono, charitable, community, and public interest activities of the Firm, Wallis was recruited as its first Executive Director. In this role, he also serves as the Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., which for over a decade has been providing support to organizations seeking to improve inner-city education. Wallis devoted the first dozen years of his legal career to legal services as an attorney and manager in several Massachusetts programs, and subsequently served as the City of Boston’s Corporation Counsel under both Mayors Flynn and Menino.
Commenting on the award, Wallis said, “I am deeply honored to receive the BBA’s Thurgood Marshall Award for the important work we are doing through the Brown Rudnick Center for the Public Interest. When the Center was launched in 2001, it was something of a ‘philanthropic game changer’ in the legal community, and today, it continues to distinguish Brown Rudnick as a leader by combining the power of pro bono legal representation, charitable giving and community service to help those in need. We will continue to build on our success to support the communities in which we work and live.”
The Thurgood Marshall Award, which was established in 1991, recognizes private attorneys in the greater Boston area for their extraordinary efforts to enhance the human dignity of others through improving, developing or delivering civil or criminal legal services to low-income clients in Massachusetts.
