Boston, MA, September 15, 2014 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, awarded a Community Grant to the Community Preparatory School in Providence, Rhode Island. The grant supports the school’s third-grade participation in Project CHICK, a program run by the local farmers at Casey Farm, which brings eggs and incubators to the classrooms so that students can learn about the life cycle of birds by watching the chicks hatch and grow over three weeks. The chickens then return to Casey Farm where students learn about sustainable agriculture and the humane treatment of farm animals. The Community Grant will specifically cover the cost of an incubator, in-class instruction, and a field trip to the farm.
According to Nicole Guyon, Community Preparatory School third-grade teacher and grant applicant, “Through Project CHICK, third-grade students become ‘chick experts’ and are able to teach the rest of the school and parents what they’ve learned. Both Casey Farm and Community Prep benefit from this truly remarkable experience, and we are grateful for the support of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., commented, “We are pleased to help third-graders from Community Preparatory School participate in Project CHICK, and we are happy to support the school’s involvement in this type of experiential learning.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month. The grant applications and an explanation of the program can be found here.
