Boston, MA, April 22, 2015 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, awarded a Community Grant to PS71 Forest Elementary School in Ridgewood, NY to support the purchase of mini iPads for use in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms. The iPads will be used to facilitate learning the English language through phonemic awareness, letter sounds, vocabulary, fluency, intonation, common interest, comprehension, and linguistics.
Nancy Wagner, PS71 teacher said, “I teach content area subjects to 365 students through technology in a computer lab setting. My students range from Kindergarten through 5th grade, many of whom are first year English language learners. I fully believe in supporting the English language learners through multiple entry points and using advanced technology to break through the barrier of learning the English language. Hands-on, interactive activities using universally recognizable technology devices facilitate this goal. We are grateful for the support of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp, said, “Computers have become a universal tool with which to communicate across different languages and cultures and they can help advance English language education. We are pleased to help PS71 Forest Elementary School to be able to use these modern day tools to engage students.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month. The grant applications and an explanation of the program can be found here.
