Boston, MA, September 20, 2018 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, has awarded a Community Grant to William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York to support its music department. Specifically, grant dollars will be used to repair 40% of the school’s instrument inventory and purchase a new set of instrumental method textbooks.
Alex Somer, Band Director at William Cullen Bryant High School and grant applicant said, “Our music department is rapidly growing. In addition to seven performing beginner ensembles, there are six intermediate/advanced ensembles that perform in countless shows. By improving our instruments and replacing our outdated textbooks, we will offer our students an enhanced music education experience. We are grateful for the support of organization’s like the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation that support music education in the classroom.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp. said, “Research shows that students in high-quality school music education programs have better language and reasoning skills, and score higher on standardized tests. We are pleased to provide students at William Cullen Bryant High School with the opportunity and resources to advance both their artistic and academic abilities through music education.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington, DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month.
