Boston, MA, September 5, 2014 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, awarded a Community Grant to the PS 414/Brooklyn Arbor School to pilot a Spanish language music and movement after-school program. The grant will allow 20-25 first-grade students enrolled in the school’s Spanish-English dual language program the opportunity to participate in the music and movement program for two hours a week.
Sara Yerry, Brooklyn Arbor School First Grade Teacher/Dual Language Coordinator and grant applicant, said, “The goal of the program is to develop Spanish language through repetition, song and movement, in a language immersion environment that encourages play and self-expression. We hope to bridge the cultural gap that exists between Spanish and non-Spanish speaking students in the classroom by providing them with access to a fun and enriching linguistic experience. The Brown Rudnick grant will allow native Spanish-speaking students to have instruction in their native language for the first time in their school experience.”
According to Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., “There are many studies that cite positive correlations between academic achievement and access to high-quality art and music instruction. We are happy to support Brooklyn Arbor School’s after-school music program to provide access to the rich cultural offerings of Hispanic dance and music.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month. The grant applications and an explanation of the program can be found here.
